Good To Know

  • Use high-quality chocolate: When making a chocolate-based dessert like Mississippi Mud Pie, it’s important to use high-quality chocolate. Using good-quality chocolate will enhance the overall flavor of the pie and make it taste even more decadent.
  • Use room temperature ingredients: For best results, use room temperature ingredients when making the pie. Room-temperature ingredients will mix together more easily, resulting in a smooth and creamy filling.
  • Preheat the oven: Before baking, make sure to preheat the oven to the correct temperature. This will ensure that the pie cooks evenly and the crust becomes golden brown.
  • Spread the meringue evenly: When spreading the marshmallow meringue over the chocolate filling, make sure to spread it evenly to the edges of the crust. This will ensure that the meringue cooks evenly and the pie has a beautiful golden brown color.
  • Let the pie cool before slicing: After baking, let the pie cool to room temperature before slicing. This will allow the pie to be set properly and make slicing it much easier. It also ensures that the filling will not melt or run when you cut it.

Ingredients and Substitutions: Recipe Essentials

  • Butter: I used unsalted butter to prepare the chocolate crust base of this southern-style mud pie. Butter is a rich and creamy ingredient that is essential to creating the perfect crust for our Mississippi mud pie. Its flavor and texture bind all the crust ingredients together, making it a crucial ingredient of the recipe. For a vegan alternative, try using margarine or coconut oil.
  • Chocolate cookie crumbs: The base of our Mississippi mud pie crust is made with crushed chocolate cookie crumbs, they provide a decadent chocolate flavor that pairs perfectly with the other ingredients. You can easily change things up and use graham cracker crumbs, Oreo crumbs, or any other chocolate cookie crumbs as an alternative.
  • Pecans: Chopped pecans in this recipe add a delightful crunch and nutty flavor to the crust, complementing the other ingredients and making the crust unique. If you don’t have pecan you can replace them with any type of nuts such as walnuts, almonds, or hazelnuts, they’re all sure to give this pie a nutty twist.
  • Sugar: I used granulated sugar to sweeten this mud pie, it adds a perfect level of sweetness to the crust, chocolate cake, and meringue, making it irresistible. To make this mud pie sugar-free you can use any type of graduated sweetener such as erythritol or xylitol, and replace it with the same amount of sugar.
  • Semisweet chocolate chips: The chocolate filling of our Mississippi Mud Pie is made with melted semisweet chocolate chips, providing a rich and intense chocolate flavor. If you prefer a different chocolate, you can swab the semi-sweet chocolate chips with unsweetened chocolate, dark chocolate, or milk chocolate as an alternative.
  • Heavy cream: I use heavy cream to make the chocolate fudge filling because of its creamy and rich flavor. If you don’t have heavy cream you can substitute it with Half-and-half or whole milk, they will both achieve a similar creamy texture.
  • Egg Whites: The egg whites are used to make the meringue, they provide structure and stability to the final product. If you want to make this Mississippi Mud Pie vegan, you can swab the eggs with aquafaba (the liquid from a can of chickpeas), or use a store-bought egg replacer can be used as a substitute.
  • Cream of tartar: I use cream of tartar to stabilize the egg whites when making the meringue, it results in a fluffy and stable final product. If you don’t have the cream of tartar on hand you can substitute it with one teaspoon of lemon juice or white vinegar to achieve a similar result.
  • Vanilla extract: This ingredient adds a touch of flavor to the meringue, complementing the other flavors perfectly. You can substitute the vanilla in this recipe and use any other flavor extract such as almond or maple extract.
  • Whole milk: almond milk, soy milk, or any other plant-based milk can be used as a substitute for whole milk in the chocolate cake layer.
  • Light corn syrup: I used light corn syrup to prepare the fudge pudding but you can also use golden syrup or glucose syrup.
  • All-purpose flour: Cake flour can be used as a substitute for all-purpose flour in the chocolate cake layer for a lighter texture.
  • Unsweetened cocoa powder: Unsweetened cocoa powder is acidic, and bitter and is typically used in cakes and muffins to aid in leavening. While Dutch-processed cocoa powder is neutral in flavor and commonly used in recipes that don’t require leavening, such as brownies, creme fillings, fudges, and puddings. If you don’t have unsweetened cocoa powder, you can use Dutch-processed cocoa powder, but you will need to increase the baking powder for the chocolate cake by 1/4 teaspoon.
