A classic soup throughout Caribbeans, this spicy Jamaican chicken foot soup with wheat or cornmeal dumplings also known as spinners is delicious and warm soup and is one of our favorite family dishes that can be enjoyed at any time of the day.

This easy to make Jamaican Chicken foot soup is made with squash or pumpkin which is optional, chayote, yam, and potatoes this Jamaican Chicken foot soup is unique in its self, it contains dumplings (spinners) that are made with cornmeal and wheat flour that is then cooked and boiled right into the soup…sooo good!

Chicken foot soup is popular amongst many cultures, chicken feet are cheap to buy and add a lot of flavor to the soup. In this recipe, you can simply prepare a stock by just cooking the chicken feet in the water and use it when you’re ready to make your soup or all in one method where you add the chicken feet and prepare the soup.

Ingredients For Jamaican Chicken Foot Soup:

  • 2 pounds chicken feet, cleaned and trimmed
  • 1 large onion chopped finely
  • 1 small chayote (choko), cut into cubes
  • 3 large yellow or white potatoes peeled and cubed into small pieces
  • 2 medium yams, cut into chunks
  • 3 stalks scallion chopped
  • 1 pound squash or pumpkin, cut into small cubes (optional)
  • 2 green Scotch bonnet pepper
  • 5 garlic cloves
  • 1 teaspoon chili seeds
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 10 cups water, for soup
  • 1 tablespoon cilantro or parsley or thyme for garnish

How To Make Jamaican Chicken Foot Soup?

  1. In your pot pour 8 cups of water then add smashed garlic cloves and salt.
  2. Once the water starts boiling add in the prepared chicken feet.
  3. Keep a close eye and when the feet are tender add squash or pumpkin and let cook for around 20 minutes.
  4. Put in the dumplings and the rest of the ingredients then cook for 20 minutes while covered.
  5. Let simmer at medium-low heat while covered till the soup becomes thick and ensure all the vegetables are cooked.
  6. Serve hot and garnish with cilantro, parsley to thyme.

Ingredients For Jamaican Boiled Dumplings:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup cornmeal or whole wheat flour
  • a pinch of salt
  • 3/4 cup of water

How To Make Jamaican Boiled Spinners (Dumplings)?

  1. Mix the two flours and add salt. Slowly add water while you make the dough with your fingers.
  2. Knead with the heel of your palm for around 3-4 minutes. It should be tangy but slightly stiff but not too sticky.
  3. Make golf sized balls about 1/2 ounce each using the dough and then flatten them with your hands and put them in your soup.

Can you Freeze Jamaican Spinners Dumplings?

You can prepare Jamaican spinners dumplings ahead of time and even freeze them so that they are ready when you prepare your soups. If using from frozen state no need to thaw just add into the hot soup.
