This is an easy recipe for a Portuguese bean cake (Bolo de feijão), a traditional dessert in Portugal that is surprisingly gluten free.
Made with just a few ingredients, this authentic Portuguese bean cake dessert is made from canned red beans, eggs, butter, cocoa, vanilla, sugar, baking powder, and baking soda.
I love bolo de feijão, gluten-free red bean cake, the first time I was introduced to it was at my sister in laws house during the holidays and I fell in love with it immediately. Although the bean cake I had there had more of a vanilla flavor, I decided to give it a twist by adding cocoa powder to make my version of a chocolate bean cake, and it was a winner and become a favorite in my family.
This bean cake’s buttery chocolatey taste, flavor, and dense moist texture is absolutely fantastic. You won’t believe that this rich chocolate cake is made with red beans and how easy, and quick it is to prepare.
Just a heads up, If you don’t have red beans, you can use black beans or white kidney beans instead, it will still turn out perfect. I also baked this bean cake in an 8-inch-round cake pan, but feel free to use a bundt or loaf cake pan instead.
