Ingredients for Mexican Ranchero Sauce (Salsa Ranchera):

  • 3 large tomatoes, peeled and diced (2 cups)
  • 2 tablespoon vegetable oil or olive oil
  • 1/2 small onion, chopped into pieces (1/4 cup)
  • 1 red chile (Serrano)
  • 2 red jalapeño peppers, stemmed and seeded
  • 2 garlic cloves, peeled
  • Juice from 2 limes
  • Pinch of Salt
  • Pinch of ground black pepper (optional)
  • 1/4 teaspoon basil or oregano (optional)
  • 2 tablespoon fresh cilantro (for garnishing)

How To Make Mexican Ranchero Sauce?

  1. In a medium size skillet, heat the add the oil on medium high.
  2. Add the garlic, onion, chile pepper, jalapeño and saute for about 4-5 minutes stirring occasionally.
  3. Reduce the heat to medium low, add in the tomatoes and cook for 6-8 minutes or until the tomatoes soften.
  4. Add the basil or oregano, black pepper and salt and stir and cook for 2 more minutes.
  5. Remove from heat and squeeze the juice of 2 limes.
  6. Keep stored in refrigerator, covered container or jar. Will keep for one week. Garish with fresh cilantro.
