How to Make Bakers Potatoes (Baked Potato)?

Making our classic Bakers Potatoes is easy and straight forward. You select the best Potatoes at your local supermarket, we recommend Yukon but you can also use russet potatoes; they will take a bit longer to bake. Slice them very thin using a mandoline. The potatoes are then layered in a baking dish with filling and spices in between the layers similar to making scalloped potatoes, then baked to perfection.

Make sure the potatoes you select are firm and not wrinkling with no roots present. Thoroughly wash your potatoes and slice then into thin rings. Follow the rest of our steps below.

Ingredients For Bakers Potatoes (Oven baked Potato):

  • 8 medium potatoes, sliced very thin
  • 8 tablespoons unsalted butter ( 1 stick 113 grams)
  • 3 medium sliced yellow onions ( thinly sliced into rings)
  • 4 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic (optional)
  • 2 teaspoons herbes de provence or (optional thyme or rosemary)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 3/4 cup of white wine
  • 1 cup beef or chicken broth
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese ( optional)

How To Make Bakers Potatoes (Oven Baked Potato)?

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) with rack in the middle position.
  2. In a medium size skillet melt 6 tablespoons of butter and olive oil on medium heat.
  3. Add the sliced onions and garlic and cook until they soften.
  4. Sieve or drain the onion mixture saving the butter sauce.
  5. Butter the bottom and side walls of the medium size baking dish with the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter .
  6. Cover the bottom of the dish with the sliced potatoes followed by a layer of the onion saute. Sprinkle some of the salt, herbes de provence ( fresh thyme or rosemary) and black pepper.
  7. Repeat by adding another layer of potatoes followed by the salt and spices.
  8. Finish off by adding the last layer of potatoes and remaining salt and spices.
  9. Pour the butter sauce onto the top layer the potatoes followed by the wine and beef or chicken broth. The liquid should reach the top of the potatoes. If needed add a bit more broth until it reached the top.
  10. Optional, cover the top layer with shredded mozzarella cheese.
  11. Place the potatoes into the oven and bake for 50-60 minutes or until potatoes are soft and tender.
  12. Remove from oven and serve.
