This famous classic traditional authentic Jamaican red pea soup recipe with kidney beans is hearty and delicious and packed with a mix of Caribbean spices and can be prepared using meat or vegetables making it a great vegetarian or vegan dish.

I have to say, that this authentic Jamaican style red pea soup by far is my families favorite Jamaican style food. It’s just packed with full of warm flavors and ingredients like, yam, sweet potato, coconut milk, bonnet pepper, pimento seeds and spinners.

Spinners are the Jamaican name for dumplings. Jamaica is known for their soups with spinners or dumplings and there is no exception for this Jamaican red pea soup. Don’t worry, we got your back with easy to follow instructions on how to make your own Jamaican dumplings.

Jamaican Red Pea Soup Vegetarian No Meat

You can simply make this Jamaican style red pea soup vegetarian without no mean and still enjoy the classic authentic taste of Jamaican Style Cuisine. Simply omit the meat in this recipe and substitute with a mix of your favorite vegetables. Since veggies cook quickly, you can add them during Step 5 below.

Jamaican Red Pea Soup Slow Cooker

The instructions below to make this Jamaican pea soup uses the tradition method by using a pot, but you can also use a slow cooker or pressure cooker to cook up this Caribbean dish.

Ingredients For The Jamaican Red Pea Soup

  • 6 cups of water (to soak beans)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 pounds kidney beans (900 grams) or use 2 canned beans
  • 1 1/2 pounds stew beef
  • 1 pound chicken or turkey neck, back, leg or foot (optional oxtail, ham bone, pig feet or tail cut into small pieces)
  • 4 garlic cloves ( cut small)
  • 2 stalks scallion (sliced into rings)
  • 1 scotch bonnet pepper ( cut in small pieces)
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 medium size onion (diced into cubes)
  • 3 teaspoons chicken soup mix ( I used Grace brand)
  • 1 potato or sweet potato (cut into cubes)
  • 2 small yams or one large one ( Cut into small pieces)
  • 3/4 teaspoon Jamaican spice (All spice, Pimento Seeds, Myrtle Pepper)
  • 2 teaspoons dried thyme
  • 1 can coconut milk
  • 1 Sweet potato

Ingredients For The Dumplings

  • 1 cup of all purpose flour
  • 3 tablespoon cornmeal
  • 1 /3 cup of water or as needed

Instructions How To Make Jamaican Dumplings (Spinners)

  1. Combine the flour, cornmeal and salt in a small bowl.
  2. Add the water and mix together until the dough begins to form. If you fine the dough to stiff, add a bit more water.
  3. Rest the dough for 15 minutes covered with plastic.
  4. Knead the dough until it’s smooth and extensible. Cover and set aside for 10 minutes.
  5. To make the spinners, pinch off a small piece of dough about 10-15 grams and roll the dough in-between your palms or on a working surface and shape into long cylindrical piece.
  6. Make sure the ends are tampered and place onto a light floured plate and cover.
  7. Repeat until all the dumplings are formed. Keep covered and refrigerated until ready to cook.
  8. You can cook the spinners/dumplings in boiling pot of water for about 5 minutes then add them to the soup or you can cook them directly in the soup, either way works.

Instructions On How To Make Jamaican Red Pea Soup?

  1. Rinse and presoak the dried kidney bean in 6-8 cups of water the night before. Water should be covering the beans.
  2. If your using canned kidney beans then add in step 5.
  3. The next day – Fill a medium size pot with water and add the beans, salt, chicken or turkey pieces or pork feet or tail and bring to a boil.
  4. Add the stew beef and continue to cook on medium high for about 45-60 minutes or until the beef stew meat and beans are tender. Add water as needed, water should also be covering the beans and meat.
  5. Add in the coconut milk, onions, scallions, soup mix, garlic, thyme, potatoes, yam, and scotch bonnet peppers and cook on medium low (simmer) for about 20-25 minutes or until potato’s and yam are tender.
  6. Add the dumplings (spinners) and cook for 5-6 minutes.
  7. Scotch bonnet peppers are super hot, you can remove from soup one cooked or omit from recipe.
  8. Serve and enjoy. You can serve with side rice.
