There are two traditional types of dishes for Ervilhas guisadas (Portuguese Pea Stew), the first one is Ervilhas guisadas com galinha which is referred to as pea stew with chicken and the second one is Ervilhas com ovos escalfados e chouriço (linguica), braised pea stew with eggs and chorizo. We have also added a vegan version of the Pea Stew.
PORTUGUESE AZOREAN PEA STEW WITH POACHED EGGS AND CHORIZO?
In a large pot, add the chopped onion, tomato, olive oil, minced garlic, paprika, salt and pimenta moida and saute on medium heat, about 2-3 minutes.
Reduce the heat to low and add the chouriço ( Portuguese Sausage), cook on for 10 minutes stirring occasionally.
Pour in the water and sweet peas and cook for 20 minutes on medium heat or until the peas are soft and tender.
Once the peas are cooked, break each egg onto the boiling stew and cook for 3-4 minutes or until the eggs are cooked.
Serve and enjoy!
ERVILHAS GUISADAS COM GALINHA (PORTUGUESE PEA STEW WITH CHICKEN?
In a large pot, add the chopped onion, tomato, olive oil, minced garlic, paprika, salt and pimenta moida and saute on medium heat, about 2-3 minutes.
Add in the chicken thighs and cook for 15 minutes stirring occasionally.
Pour in the 3 cups of water and cook the chicken for about 40-45 minutes on medium heat. If needed add another 1/2 cup of water.
Add in the sweet peas and cook for additional 20 minutes on medium heat or until the peas are soft and tender.
Serve hot and enjoy with a slice of bread!

In a large pot, add the chopped onion, tomato, olive oil, minced garlic, paprika, salt and pimenta moida and saute on medium heat, about 2-3 minutes.
